I got a 640 x 360 .avi file, and I was wondering how i could get it so that it won't be S--T--R--E--T--C--H--E--D out on the TV when I play it.

btw - I use TMPEnc for encoding from avi to mpg.

What's your target framesize in the mpeg?
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Yes, I did select "Keep Aspect Ratio", and my target framesize is
    320 x 240 for the mpeg.

This movie was originally made in 16:9 widescreen

I found this answer previously posted by user banjazzer

The settings in TMPG to use are Source aspect ratio=1:1(VGA) and Video arrange method=Full screen (keep aspect ratio). A widescreen movie will then play with correct aspect ratio, with black bands below and above the movie.
I wonder though about that setting of 320x240. I always use 352x240.

My players would throw a fit if I tried a width of 320.

Is there perhaps a step-by-step guide somewhere on doing it, from start to finish, from original AVI to finished mpeg?

If there is, it'd really be a big help.

    (sorry for the double-post.)

using 320 instead of 352 leaves room for letterboxing of 16 on both top and bottom
what are you askin' me for...
    I'm an idiot!

You'll have to explain this one to me?????

I understand the mechanics of how I could achieve this by shrinking my image and forcing upper and lower bands in the top and bottom dring the resize while maintaining the aspect ratio and so forth......... but.......

Why would I want to do it unless I changed it back to 352x240 and this time did not preserve the aspect ratio? This would introduce a slight distortion but would add those bands you mention. My final target would still be 352x240.

My standalone players and I suspect most others would not accept 320 as a valid w i d t h.

This is posted in the newbie questions and the size of 320x240 I suspect is probably unintended and more than likely an oversight in conversion.

When I have a suspicion about a possible cause , I often try to guide new users in the form of questions instead of always stating the obvious answer.
    That's why I asked unknown_1000:

320 x 240 is the standard size for television shows. If you select
"Center (Keep Aspect Ratio)" while converting from avi to mpeg, you will create a black "picture frame" around the top, bottom and sides of the movie. This gives your stand-alone DVD player "useless space" to stretch the image, so that it will go full screen, and you won't cut anything off.
