  1. What is the cheapest and best All-In-One Encoder and Burner available out there that will convert AVI files to MPEG 1 & 2 files? Where is the site where I can order it?

  2. While not strictly an all in one, DVD2SVCD runs an automatic script to make several programs behave as such. It sources AVI as well as DVD and PVB to mpeg-1 and 2. You will need either CCE or Tmpgenc for encoding.

Well, Nero aspires to this all-in-one capability, even if I don't know for sure what input it accepts - It says "MPEG or AVI" at least.
This said, I'm off to my usual rants about all-in-one software packages - But I'll try to restrain myself, and just ask: Have you ever seen a professional mechanic use a Swiss Army knife as his/her tool par preferance?

  4. Ulead DVD MovieFactory. Just $45 or 50. Makes VCD, SVCD, DVD. Has good encoder and better burning strattegies than Nero (relevant with some extremely cheap DVDs). Authors everything with menus (or without). Is limited with target bitrate options and only CBR encoding. So, it is pretty good for VCD, but not so good for SVCD or DVD.
