Hi there,
In order to get them onto DVD-r you are going to need to get them into a compliant mpeg format. This would mean one of the following
US (NTSC)
352x240 (VCD) Mpeg 1
352x480(1/2 D1) Mpeg2
720x480(D1) Mpeg 2
UK / EUROPE / OTHER (PAL)
352x288 (VCD) Mpeg1
352x576(1/2 D1) Mpeg2
720x576(D1) Mpeg2
Considering these files are a combination on avi and mpeg I doubt, (though I may be wrong), that the files are higher than 320x576 resolution (unless you captured them for SVCD).
Firstly get a copy of TMPGENC if you dont already have it. Then get Virtual dub.
For the AVI files load them into virtualdub and use the frameserving mode to encode into TMPGENC encoding to 1/2 D1 (352x480 or 352x576 depending on your location) mpeg 2 with your audio encoded at 48khz.
For the mpeg files life MAY be easier. If the files are already VCD compliant (e.g. 352x240 or 352x288) then all you need to do is re-encode the audio. Use TMPGENC/TOOLS/mpeg tools/basic demultiplex to split the files into audio and video streams then load the audio back into tmpgenc and re-encode it to 48khz then use TMPGENC/TOOLS/mpeg tools/basic multiplex to re-multiplex the file.
If the mpeg files are not vcd compliant but they are mpeg 1 you can use virtual dub in the same way as you used it for AVI. If the mpeg files are mpeg 2 but are not in one of the above frame sizes you will need to use DVD2AVI and re-encode the mpegs in the same way as you would for re-encoding a DVD rip, (which means you can use the DVD rip guides for reference)
Once you have mpeg2 files with 48khz audio in the formats listed above MOST dvd authoring packages will accept 1/2 D1 files. If you have any DVD authoring packages you may want to check that they accept 1/2 D1 before going through the encoding process. Also some DVD authoring packages will only accept files as basic streams (e.g. audio and video demultiplexed)
Hope this helps as a jumping off point, you may want to check the excellent guides here and at www.doom9.org as they helped me to get onto the digital video bandwagon
Cheers
Ed
