  1. I have been using personalStudio by Adamation for my video capturing and rendering. I like it. When the rendering is done, I have the option of putting the video back onto my DV camcorder. Then I use it for any viewing. Would there be an advantage quality wise to burn it to an SVCD? The convenience of using a disc as opposed to rewinding and searching on the camcorder seems nice but don't want to lose quality.

    Thanks.

SVCD will most likely be a step down in quality, but will still look good. If you want to put them on discs, the best place to go with DV is to DVDR.

If your DVD player supports XSVCD's, you could burn it to CD and not loose any quality. I make XSVCD's with a res. of 480x480 and a VBR of 4000. The quality is perfect! The down side is you can only get 20min of video per CD. For most home videos this is OK, once you edit out all the bad camera shots and only put on what is good.

If the quality of your source is good, then there is nothing wrong with VCD, all the "DVD" rips I have converted to VCD are almost as good as the originals. It is not necessary to go to SVCD and eat up extra disks.

If you had saved to SVCD then this would be a different matter, as you would not want to convert from mpeg 2 to mpeg 1
There are people converting from compressed AVI to SVCD, when VCD would be just as good.

Try to save what ever you captured without any conversion, maybe make a data disk for now, as DVD writers are getting cheaper everyday

  5. Now I just need to find a decent DVD player to play my creations.

Check out the RCA 5240P I have this one and it will play anything I throw at it... VCD, SVCD, XSVCD, CVD, MP3's etc.... Best Part is you can pick on up for around $99.00

How can you make VCD almost as good as DVD when DVD is 704x480 with more than 5000kbps but VCD only 352x240 @ 1150 kbps? Can you give us some steps to make almost-quality-dvd VCD?

  8. Even a perfect VCD will not look anywhere as good as a DVD -- though it may depend on your TV...

If you have a good enough TV (or even a pretty standard sized one), you will notice the difference between VCD, SVCD and DVD.

A very good VCD will look about as good as good VHS.

This sounds like you think people don't have very good TV's then ?, Do you have a good TV ?, you can hardly blame the quality of a VCD based upon the playback equipment. I'm sure all those people in Asia would disagree.

I have a Sony DVD player, and a Sony WS TV, the VCD's I "See" when played are almost as good as DVD's, and far better better than VHS. This does not mean I am making them any better than anyone else, it means VCD's are also good.

You could also say that a DVD played on an old player and a old TV would also be poor quality.

  10. IMHO if i watch VCD on a tiny TV like 13" and down the quality of video look pretty good but same vcd same dvd player but wiht big screen TV 36" and up then quality of video become pixelation. I'm not sure if you relize this.

Maybe I have to change all my systems, buy a new progressive scan DVD plus Plasma TV with HDTV ready.

    Anyone wanna donate some bucks?

Check out at compusa, they sell toshiba sd1800(play cdr/cdrw, VCD, MP3) for Free after rebate($17) and additional rebate($65).

For additional you have to buy 12 DVD at compusa in order to get $65 additional rebate. If you don't want to buy then final price will be $65.00 which I also think a good deal.

Or you can check out at Sam's Club for APEX 5131, 3 changer discs for 89 bucks. (You have to have member card, thou).

  12. Well, KingJohn, I suggest that its time to get your eyes checked. Even a perfect VCD will look pretty different from a DVD on any standard sized TV. Even if there are no artifacts, a 352x240/288 image is nowhere as sharp as the DVD's 720x480/576.

BTW, if your VCDs look definitely better than VHS, it may be because your player is doing a degree of filtering.

I don't understand how someone can claim a VCD looks even remotely as good as a DVD. Even a SVCD has remarkably better quality than a VCD. On any hardware the differences between these three formats should be plainly easy to see.

I have fooled many of my friends and family into believing a SVCD is really a DVD, so obviously their eyes aren't that discerning. Yet when I show them a well authored VCD from a DVD source they always say it looks about like VHS but that the "DVD" they just watched (actually a SVCD) looked much better.

Also just a side note, most movies will easily fit on 2 cdrs in SVCD format with very good quality so rarely will a SVCD need to use more disks than a VCD.

The only way to make a VCD look "DVD" like, is through filtering. Using for example descaler and a cheap projector, it gonna look close enough.
But if you use the same hardware with DVD discs, then DVDs quality also gonna double, so still no comparison between them...

It is like CVD and SVCD: If you use sharpen filters, CVD gonna look like SVCD. If you use the same filters on SVCD, SVCD gonna look even more better - in terms of sharpness-

Filtering is a wonderfull thing, but it is just that: Filtering. It covers very well the true. And the true is that VCD is no way close to DVD or even CVD/SVCD. It is not even close to VHS! A good pro VCD can be about 90 - 95% of a pro VHS tape quality and thats it....

    Anything else is nonsence, sorry...
