I was wondering if you can burn a vcd with a black cd-r, and if most standalone dvd player can play them??

Yes, you can use black CD-R media as they are just like any other media except with a black dye in the polycarbonate substrate (this doesn't affect reading as it is transparent to infra-red).
However, it is no more likely to work than any other brand of media in DVD players not designed to play CD-R/W media.

I always buy black memorex cd-rs and they work perfectly. Plus they look so cool!
