starts fine then becomes jerky

Looked at some posts on this problem but nothing really answers the problem I've had lately.

The last 3 or 4 DIVX encodes I've done using TmpgEnc have started out fine when I play them on my DVD player but then they become jerky even when there is not a lot of motion. This becomes worse as the film continues.

I always check the properties of the DIVX/XVID file before I encode to match the template used (usually 23.976 fps) and I've had Direct Show set to the highest priority setting in the environmental settings (recommended in other topics relating to a jerky picture). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have updated to the latest TmpgEnc today and will try it to see if it is any better.

Should I be using a different environment setting rather then Direct Show ??

I've played around with the settings since my first post and have encoded a piece 30 minutes into the avi. I also swapped field settings which only made the choppiness worse.
I didn't have any luck until I changed the template from 23.976 to 29.97 fps. The video then smoothed right out. Does anyone know why this would work when the original avi has a frame rate of 23.976 according to the properties when I looked at the file in windows explorer ???? I assume these should be kept the same.
