capturing from VHS on a hi-quality sony SVHS deck with virtualdub, huffyuv codec and an asus v6800 capture card, to VCD resolution with a higher XVCD bitrate.
the video looks great, but sometimes when it plays the scene the image suddenly darkens. like the action will keep going, but it noticeably becomes darker. it's not my original videotape, and i don't think it's on playback since i used both windows media player and virtualdub. so i assume it's during capture but i don't know what the problem is... do you think it's my video card?or maybe a virtualdub setting (hopeful)?

Sounds like you're trying to capture a copyprotected video tape (Macrovision).

out of curiousity, what ismacrovision and how does it work?
however, that is not the case this time. i am capturing my own VHS tapes bought from retail that i have taped television series off of the TV.
