I'm having a tough time finding a progressive scan DVD player that has a Dolby Digital decoder. I really don't want to replace my Yamaha R-V902 receiver, which has 5.1 input and output but no decoder.

Having multiple trays or a carousel would be a plus, and I'd even consider a Region-free player, but prefer to stay with a mainstream make.

    Any suggestions?

  2. Try Pioneer DV655A or Sony DVP-500V.

There is also a cheap $89 go-video player at heartland America.

That "cheap" Go Video player isn't progressive scan by any chance, is it?

I've also seen reviews on the Toshiba SD4700 & SD5700, but I'd kind of like to hold out for a multi-disc changer, since the kids always have something in there ready to play.

    Thanks,

  4. You are right. I did not see you say "progresive".
Look like pioneer and sony has players for you.
You can go to bestbuy and they show you what the back connection are like.

  5. I am not sure that it has everything that you want but a Philips DVD-724 (progressive) would be a good choice.

  6. Panasonic has players with both and play MP3, VCD and DVD-R, but watch out on the 5.1 decoders I only found one so far that will alow you to control the main 5 speaker volumes from the DVD Player or in my case it is the Panasonic DMR-E10 DVD recorder, I have complete conrol over all the channels volume from the DMR, most you only have control over the volume of center, rears and sub, not your 2 main speakers.

  7. I think you'd be better off either buying a receiver with an integrated decoder, or even a standalone decoder. It's getting harder and harder to find players with built-in decoders - and you end up sacrificing other features.

But you did ask, and I will respond:

The Philips Q50 has progressive scan and an internal DD (and DTS) 5.1 decoder. It's considered a high-end unit as it contains rather nice Faroujda-designed display technology. It's a shame the menu system is embarrasingly bad. And I have other problems with this unit. The front panel display - a dot matrix square with lots of potential, no less - is essentially useless. My 2nd-gen Philips (which this replaced) and 1st gen Apex have better FF and REW than this one. And the remote control layout is just plain sad. I always end up at the beginning of the chapter when I intend to just rewind a few seconds.

Philips makes your movies come to life with the DVDQ50AT DVD Player with Faroudja FLI2200 state-of-the-art Progressive Scan Technology. Its digitally sharp display has pixel by pixel film and video based motion interpolation with frame x frame 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown compensation.

I've spent too much money on home theater stuff already this year (Mits 55819, HD receiver, ReplayTV 4080, distribution throughtout home), so there's no way I'll be "upgrading" my receiver this year. My receiver has output control of each of the 6 channels, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Does anybody know anything good or bad about the Panasonic CP-72?
    How 'bout the JVC XV-FA900BK?

    Thanks,

    Tim
