  1. I downloaded an SVCD that is an MPEG2 file with two xxx.srt subtitle files.
Normally, I put the mpg through VCDEasy in VPC/Win98, which gives me two files to burn as multitracks. Can I just add the two .srt files with the two .mpg tracks and have the subs work? Or can you tell me what I need to do?

    Any info appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I think ".srt" is a subrip file, made when somebody extracted the subtitles from VOBs. You can download subrip from doom9.org and run it in VPC, open the .srt file and convert it to another format. I see two possibilities here - either they included the srt files for convenience and the subs are already embedded in the movie, or they included them and you'll have to add them in yourself.

Selectable SVCD subtitles are stored as a stream in the MPEG file, so if you can list the streams in the file you'll see audio, video, sometimes padding, and if there are subtitles you'll see an extra stream for them. Most software doesn't seem recognize the subtitle stream and just calls it a user stream or private stream or something.

I'm not sure if there's a nice Mac utility for multiplexing selectable SVCD subtitles in to an MPEG, since I do most of my VCD stuff in Windows (all that free software... otherwise my Win2k machine would sit unused 95% of the time). There's damned little even on the Windows side for that. If you can't find anything on the Mac side you can use winsubmux in VPC to multiplex the subtitles in to the movie. VCDEasy also doesn't seem to be very reliable when dealing with movies that have selectable subtitles, unfortunately.
