  1. Can someone tell me if there is a way to get my dvd player to play movies that i create using Ulead DVD Morvie Workshop or Nero using NTSC DVD format and burn to cd? I have read that if you burn your dvd home made movie to cd your dvd player is supposed to play it. Can someone please shed some light on this? thanks

You can author and burn a DVD format with the exact same directory structures with vob files etc... and put them on a cd or cdrw.

    The problems:

1- You will only get about 12 minutes of video on 1 cd.
2- Your Standalone will not respond comletely like a DVD but rather like an svcd. One indication of this is that you cant use the remote to tab through the menus but you can advance by using the numbers if you have built multiple jump points in the menus of the mpg (vob).

I haven't made one of these in about 2 years but I do believe that it accepted AC3 audio just like a real DVD.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

i think i have a part 3 do you know how fast a cd would have to be spinning to play the whole thing in 12 minutes? i hope you have your dvd player under warranty or have some spare pickup lasers laying around.
i can't think of 12 minutes of nothing that's that important to put on one cdr.

    dvfan:

Keep in mind that I am only answering the question that was asked.

jkl makes a good point and I am sure there are others.

I am not recommending this since it has no real benefit other than to practice making DVD's and menus with DVD authoring software. I am just saying that it can be done with some limitations.

I didn't keep my samples as they were on CDRW. They may have held as much as 20 minutes, it was ages ago as computers go, so I have forgoten. You can get a bit more time if you drop the video bitrate a little.

You're talking about miniDVD. It's essentially a regular (but short) DVD burned onto the CD-R medium. The biggest problem with this format is that a very large number of players will NOT recognise the disc because they will only look for DVD data if the disc itself is a DVD. While some hacked firmwares fix this problem, by no means do the majority support this feature. Keep that in mind before you spend too much time on this...

Look in the DVD player section to the left for more info on players, and look through the guides to get more info on miniDVD.

As for uses... not a lot (besides for fun) but home video would be a great candidate. I would have gone with that if there was any chance that my discs would be readable by my relatives.

  6. Thanks for all your responces, The reason i wanted to do the DVD format on CDr is too transfer a small video clip to VHS with the best quality possible without having a dvd burner. I have read many times that this is possible, but in my case my Apex AD1100W does not play the dvd format cdrs i burned it just displays the directory structure on the screen, if i select the vob file it plays with no sound, and i was wondering if im doing something wrong when or if there is a software or something that will enable my dvd player to play my DVD format CDrs Thanks Again

  7. Most standalone DVD players that refuse to play miniDVDs cannot be made or patched to play them.

If your player has a file broswer, it will most likly play VOB files with AC3 audio.

That's how I test files before burning to DVD
