Is SVCD really an AVI file. I recently bought a CD with a film downloaded from the web in SVCD format but because I was unable to play it on my dvd player even though it stated it supported this format on the box I decided to convert the file to something it could read so the first job was to find out what the name of the file and its extention was. It turns out the file was called SVCD.avi. So I'm sure I read somewhere on this site that no stand alone DVD Players read avi files is this true? and why name it SVCD? it all a bit head scratching. In other words how could you covert an SVCD file to an AVI file of visa versa if they are the same format.
Or I'm I just being a stupid Nube

No SVCD is .mpg...it was probably converted originally from a SVCD file to a DivX file so they named it that.
