  1. Hi:
I know this is for "software playing" issues. But I couldn't find the "hardware playing" forum.
I have a philips DVD 521 DVD player, I tried to play imported VCD (asia), which is PAL format. But I got black-white scrolling pictures, with the right sound. So I think it's the compatibility problem. My TV only accept NTSC signal.(SONY 27").
The DVD player do have output selection feature, that I can choose PAL or NTSC output. However, no matter what I choose, I keep getting the scrooling pictures , since the VCD is encoded by PAL format.
I was wondering if I could solve this problem by purchasing a PAL->NTSC converter? and choose PAL as the DVD output.
    thank you!

  2. I really don't know much about how standalone DVD player handle different formats, so someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're going to have to convert the MPG file on the VCD from PAL to NTSC, then re-burn it. You should be able to do this using TMPEG, after extracting (multiplexing) the video file from the VCD. Like I said, I haven't done this in a long time, so I would suggest that before you do anything you look through the plethora of guides here on this site dealing with creating or conversting VCDs, this should give you an idea of what you are going to have to do. Look under How To on the bar to the left.

Hope this helps, wish I could be more specific, but I guess some input is better than none

  4. yeah, bettern than no reply!
I know how to convert the format, but I just don't want to re-burn all the vcds I bought into NTSC format. some of the TV series have more than 20 discs per title!

  5. the PAL/NTSC switch on Philips DVD-players only affects the menu... not how a DVD or (S)VCD is played. If the VCD is PAL.... it will play it as PAL, that's why the switch doesn't help you. A PAL/NTSC converter will do the trick i guess but i've never used one myself. Otherwise..... i think you're in for a LOT of converting i'm afraid (or do you consider buying a different television?).
