  1. ...to encode a 5-minute AVI movie clip to MPEG-1 using TMPGEnc software utility? Is it Real Time?

  2. It is not real time and it depends on what quality settings you have chosen with tmpgenc, it also depends on the speed of your processor, and how much memory you have. I have a amd athlon at 1.2ghz with 384mb of ram, with tmpgenc set to high motion search at normal vcd standards and it takes 9:14.

It depends on the setting of TMPGEnc.
A clip of 30 sec.(AVI)to PAL VCD vith the "Motion search Precision" different settings.
    Motion Estimate 5:39 min.
    Highest very (slow) 8:20 min.
    High (slow) 6:19 min.
It works great but be patient.
