My friend said that I should not download the latest version 2.58. He said I should try to find an older version like 12a because I will have to pay for the program otherwise.
Is this true? What version should I download.
ps I am new to this but learning fast.

For a while now you can only create SVCD with the purchased version after a certain number of days. From version 2.57 it is necessary to have other (non-free) software in order to encode to SVCD, even with the purchased version. (eg PowerDVD). You can look for ways around this, or settle to record only to VCD. The last free version which supported SVCD was, I believe, 1.2a. You can get this at http://www.apachez.net/1_tools.htm
