NEED HELP WITH DVD RIPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi,
i need help ripping a dvd to a vcd. i used smart ripper to get the .vob files. then when i opened up DVD2AVI, i opened up my movie(vob),went to "audio", "mp3compress", "setting" and changed it to DUAL CHANNEL 224kb/sec. (by the way, what is VBR, CBR, and ABR?) anyway, i then went to "audio", "mp3compress", "use", and i cahnged the setting to "save with WAV header" Should i have changed it to "save as mp3 file"??? i then pressed "SAVE PROJECT", but it didn't do anything! i didn't have the d2v file OR the wav file! please help!

"Constant Bit Rate (CBR) encoding means that you encode a file at a fixed rate, such as 128 Kpbs. For many people this is a common method of encoding MP3s. You can usually tell CBR files because they have consistent file sizes and sound quality. OK, file sizes aren't the kind of thing most of you will look out for. We know that.

Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoding is a method that ensures high audio quality bit-allocation decisions during encoding. The encoder allocates an appropriate amount of data per second, depending on the complexity of the audio file.

ABR allocates 90 percent of the bits directly with the given target bitrate. This goes the same as in CBR, but in CBR the bitreservoir is limited, due to the constrained and fixed frame size. In ABR there we have an unlimited bit reservoir as in VBR too. If the reservoir is too small, then allocate a larger frame, that's it. The difference between VBR and ABR is, in VBR we allocate as many bits as we need to get the quantization noise masked, in ABR not.

If there are very complex parts in a song it will use a quite high bit rate and a lower bitrate for something such as silence. The average bit rate may not be as high as the bitrate of an MP3 of the same quality with constant bitrate. "

for dvd ripping, i recommend using dvd2svcd (http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net/).. it'll do all the required steps for you, which basically allows you to set up all your prefs, click 'go' and walk away. dvd2svcd does not include cinema craft encoder, which you should get. feel free to send me an email and I'll give you some more info about it.

if you're gonna use dvd2svcd, this is what I use. I'm by no means an expert in dvd ripping, but I've gotten good results

for the AVI extraction, I turn NTSC field operation to off

for audio, use 160 or 192kbit. make sure autodetect azid gain is checked

you shoudn't have to adjust the bitrates, as dvd2svcd does a pretty good job at calculating them based on the movie length. I guess if you're gonna use 90 or 100min discs you might wanan change the settings

for encoding, if you're using CCE (cinema craft encoder), 4pass vbr gives good results. I haven't tried out the anti noise filter so I'm not really sure what difference it makes.

As for encoding times, a 2 hour movie (which results in 3 CDs) takes my machine 9 - 10hours from start to finish. This is on a 1gig athlon thunderbird, with 384megs of sdram, and an 80gig 8meg cache western digital drive.
