  1. im deciding wchich dvd writer to buy. i want it to be not so expensive 350ish . i decided to stay wth the Pioneer DVR-A04. but i see it does not have dvd+r and +rw. dows the + really matter instead of the -?

i checked more and the Vivastar RS-212 supports + instead of - for the same price off 299. so is the vivastar a better buy?

  4. Zorz,
DVD-R is more compatible with dvd players, the media is cheaper(at this time)and if you get that new Sony drive it will burn at 4x(as opposed to
    2.4x)http://www.sonystyle.com/home/item.jsp?hierc=9683x9714x9715&catid=9715&itemid=50044&type=o

Debatable, but you can definitely get dvd-r cheap media cheaper than you can get cheap dvd+r media. But, I agree that there's no reason to go with anything but that Sony drive if you're going to get one now.

I think there is little argument (although I'm sure I'll get one) that dvd+rw is a better rewriteable format in terms of compatibility with stand alone players and data storage (although not as good as dvd-r or dvd+r compatibility.) My personal feeling is that dvd-r and dvd+r have the same compatability percentage, around 90%. Plus, if you have the Sony drive if one doesn't work for one player you need to make a disc for, you get to try the other one.

  6. DVD+RW is either only as compatible or less so than DVD-RW.

The hype that DVD+RW would prove to be more compatible than DVD-RW turned out to be just that.

DVD-R/+R are both more compatible than both the rewritable formats.

  7. Vitualis,

What about the problems associated with dvd-rw regarding storage of data? I've only owned a + drive, so I'm without comparison but I've heard that -rw was not so hot with data and that was where dvd-ram shined. With DLA (drive letter access) I can use a dvd+rw just like a hard disk, delete files right from the disk, and go copy another file onto it. Can you use something like DLA with -rw?
