Hi, I've got limited computer funds, so please don't suggest computer solutions unless they're fairly cheap. Thx.![]()
I've got a bunch of dvds (and three little kids) and I'm looking to backup my dvds so they don't continue to destroy them. I'm thinking a vcd recorder, maybe the new Likko one or whatever. Any ideas on this? It would obviously have to be something that could disable macrovision, I suppose. Also, I think the obvious alternative (dvd drive for computer, software, cd burner, tons of time) doesn't really work for me. I've got a PII 333 notebook with 96MB of RAM, and an external USB burner. I'm not in a position where I can upgrade to a kick-ass 2.4GB desktop with a buttload of RAM and a DVD writer. It's just not in the budget. Right now I've got a decent Samsung dvd player (plays vds, mp3 cds, etc) and a modest home theater system, but I really want to backup these dvds. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, and please reply directly to scottdaley@onebox.com

There is a unit called the "Terapin" that will directly record material to VCDs. It can also directly record to audio CD I believe.
Macrovision isn't an issue with the device from reports.
There have been many user comments on this device be people on this forum. Search the forums for "Terapin" and you will find plenty of information and opinions.
Good luck.

I'd go for the Terapin without a doubt, I've owned a rebadged Likko and they're crap, major lip synch problems. The Terapin is a far better machine.

"Terapin's are going for about $260 shipped"
yeah... but can't you get a dvd burner for that kind of money these days? -
Yeah, but with only a PII 333 notebook I need to be able to backup dvds using component video stuff, not a computer drive(s). The Philips and Panasonic dvd recorder component boxes they sell now won't allow for a direct dvd player-to-dvd recorder connection because of macrovision bullshite. At least the Terapin will allow that, I think, even if it's only vcds it's making.
