I just finished my first encode of a CVD with mpeg2. Up until now, I had mostly stuck with VCD at a high bitrate for better compatibility. I'm truly glad that I decided to try this!!!! On my standalone the 352x480 res produces an outstanding picture on my TV and since I only put 42 minutes on a disc, it even looks great at 1024x768 on my PC. I also must say that I'm TRULY impressed with the speed CCE does this. I had only used it with dvd2svcd and didn't see much improvement over tmpg with that, but, as a standalone encoder........WOW!!!! It encoded a 40 min section of video with a 3 pass VBR with min set to 2200 in less than an hour and a half. Same job with tmpg would have taken 3-4 hours I'm thinking. Still doesn't make it something I'd spend $2K on, but definetly worthwhile if you have other avenues to get this software.
