  1. Dark, low contrast video (think Star Trek and other space movies) looks very bad with my basic skills methods. I backup my DVDs using Smartripper, DVD2AVI and TMPGenc. The dark areas on screen look very pixilated, broken up instead of an even black or grey. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks!

  2. There are probably ways to fix it but what you're seeing is the compression that's being done to the video.

I've seen this too, specially in intro text backgrounds and such, when viewed on the computer. When played on my TV, there's not a sign of them - maybe my TV has too low color resolution?

your tv is more than likely turned to high in brightness ... most tv's and amost all monitors are turned up to much ...

contrast 100% , brightness 30% is a good start but there are web sites around that can help dial in the proper settings .. you can then make a vcd of the color charts and step grey scale and use them to set up your tv
