  1. I am using an HP 200i\j. After perusing many of the posts I don't see you guys talking about +R\W at all. Is this because you are long-timers and + wasn't out yet? My first drive was the 200. Just curious.

BTW, not too much experience with a variety of discs, but I have used Verbatim (great, 3 for 3 of my players), Memorex (pretty good, 2 for 3) and Imation (sucks, 1 for 3).

  2. DVD-R is a lot more popular than DVD+R.

  3. Personally, I love my 200i. The numbers I've heard are that there are twice as many -r/w units sold as +r/w units. Not the end of the world for +r/w as it has been out a significantly less period of time, especially the +r drives.

Regarding your issues with media, were you referring to +r or +rw and were you talking about making coasters or the discs just not being recognized in your standalone? If you're talking about being read in your standalone, go with +r it has much better readability. I've only made 2 coasters so far out of over 50 burned dvds (not including my own screw ups). My current cheap media of choice are the unmarked Ritek dvd+r discs, which can be found online between $2.00 and 2.50 a piece.

  4. That is what I was curious about. I thought +R had better readability in standalone players so I though people would rush to get them when they came out.

For media, I was referring to playability in standalone players. I have a Pioneer DVL-700 combi player, Toshiba SD-4700 progressive scan, and a Shinco 300 series. The Shinco is a P.O.S. so it is a good litmus for cheap media. The Pioneer was manufactured in 1997 so it is a good test for older players. And my Toshiba is my progressive baby...great player. Has played all discs I have thrown at it. And I was referring to +R media, not +rw. (Interesting side, if I am remembering correctly, my Pioneer will play +r but not +rw discs.)

Thanks for letting me know what you use for +r media in players. I just spent $60 at Best Buy for a Memorex tall box 10-pack. Thought that was a good deal until I see you guys buying them for a lot less. So that is why I threw out the +R question because you all are talking about -r media and prices and I wanted to get in on the good deals, but didn't know what brands were working for you in standalone players (for +r).

I belive that its been shown that, at present, -R and +R have almost the exact same player readability rate. The same holds true for +RW and -RW.

Yeah, I was buying those at first too... The -R's are definitely cheaper for the moment (at least the cheap ones are) but that will equalize eventually (I hope). Check out Rima.com for some cheap Riteks.

  7. Did you make multiple copies and use mode 1 and mode 2?
Just curious. From experience I found my +RW discs were readable in 3 for 3 players in mode 1 and mode 2. But the +R was only readable in mode 2 and I have been keeping my mode 1 +R around to see if I will finally find something that will play it.

  8. I am not sure which mode the discs have been made in because I haven't been using Nero, where you can choose. I have been using RecordNow to put the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc because programs like SpruceUp don't recognize +R. Nero does support the 200i, I just haven't been using it for DVD burning. Thought I would give that a try since I see a lot of you are using Nero to do the burning.

  12. Just don't believe everything in the FAQ there hey?

Search for DVD+RW on the forums and you will find links to a number of good review sites.
