  1. Staples.com is selling Verbatim DVD-R 20-Pack spindle with printable tops for only $24.23. That comes out to $1.22 per disc. Sounds like a hot deal. I don't know what quality these are though. Just search for item # VER93966

Also, it looks like these normally go for about $250.00+ Check out this link to pricegrabber: pricegrabber link Even buy.com has these for $290.95: buy.com link. No clue why every other place has them for so much more.

    Dre,

Look closer, I believe those disks are for "Authoring", not General use (i.e. all us home brew folks).

I found this about a week ago, but it looked too good to be true so I checked the p/n on the Verbatim website...

Don't get me wrong, if you have a need for these its a great deal. In fact, I bet the first person to order them will set off all kinds of alarms at Staples when they realize they just lost ~ $200 on a single sale.

No prob, I almost wet my pants when I first saw the price. Verbatim is typically $5 - $6 each for DVD-R media, so $1.2x was a STEAL!

Like I said, first person who needs these is gonna make Staples an unhappy camper.

  5. So what is the difference between "authoring" and "general purpose" discs? Why couldn't these be used in a normal dvd-r writer?

    The basic differences are:

    1. "Authoring" is aimed at video professionals
    2. Different wavelength of laser light
    3. "General" has specific design limitations to prevent bit for bit copying of CSS encrypted discs. 8)
