Im trying to rip the green mile but even after running it through dvd shrink its still to big, ive removed what i can certain audio and such things, im only trying to rip the movie not the extras. If i try to use dvd2one it starts and after a few seconds it comes up with a message saying dvd2one has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Any ideas how i can rip ythis film.

You could try running it thorough Shrink again ( not the whole disc , just the part you already ripped )

One of the few remaining "issues" with DVD Shrink (and Nero Recode, since it's the same engine) is that occasionally it will utterly refuse to actually meet the target size. Advanced Analysis helps for this, but even then sometimes you run into trouble. When this happens, just start again and specify a size that's smaller than the size of a DVD-R by about the amount that it was over... and you ought to get a bit closer on the bottom end.

It wont let me shrink it twice just comes up the same as it was before, same as the first time, on automatic how do i use the custom level, ie put a figure in say 60%

You want a custom target size, not a custom compression rate. The issue is that the algorithm that tries to match the target size is not perfect.
This is one of the reasons people used to (or still do, presumably) use DVD2One instead of DVD Shrink. It was much better at hitting the target size reliably.

Ive used every version i can get, i ripped it with smart ripper but any version of dvd2one gives the same error.

No offense, but I like the suggestion of ripping it to two discs. No need to compress.
Just use the ReAuthor feature. It might even allow you room for some extrashttp://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=dvdsplit&name=shrinksplit

Some Movies are just too big to shrink. Green Mile, Dances with Wolves Director cut, any LOTR Directors/extended version, LOTR 3. They are better off as 2 DVDR's (or transcoded to a high bitrate 1/2D1).
You should never ever "Shrink it twice", that's jsut too much compression, expect artifacts out the wazoo. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan
