O-K, so im planning on buying the Pioneer DVR104/AO4, but just for the hell of it...I tried ripping Scary Movie 2 on my uncles old Compaq. Don't laugh but it's on Windows 98 with 450mhz, 128mb and 20gig hd. (im not sure the speed of his DVD-Rom drive but it's as old as his comp.![]()
Anyways, i used SmartRipper and im only ripping the video and 6(ch) audio and it's taking 40 hours!![]()
Now, i have a Celeron 700mhz 320mb and 40gig hd. running Windows XP Pro. I know it's not that much better, but i hope it doesn't take this long when i buy the DVD burner? So far, i haven't had any problems with lack of "power" from my computer as far as encoding and stuff.
So for those who have this burner, is the burner really slow at ripping, and am i going to have to deal with long hours of ripping everytime?

I think you are missing the Winaspi32.dll file in the directory file where you have the smart ripper program. This file should be in your windows operating system directory, C:\window\system32 if I'm not mistaken. You can use the search file command to find the file and copy it onto the directory where your smartripper program is located. I hope this helps.

I checked in my uncles computer running Windows 98 for that file in both c:/windows/system and c:/windows/system32 and the closest thing i found to that file is winaspi.BAK
On my computer, i didn't even find anything at all. Im not sure if i need this file for XP Pro? I also noticed that in my SmartRipper folder, there's a file called :NoASPI MS-DOS Batch file
So what should i do now and why would i need this file? Should i maybe download SmartRipper from somewhere else? -
do a search on google for that file and put it in the folder. It should work better

Oh Wow!!! I am in deep sh!t!!!!
I found the files from adaptec and when i installed the aspi files, and my uncles computer crashed. Everytime the computer starts now, it's in safe mode.
I am so not installing those files on my computer. Infact, when i read about those aspi files...It said they were for when you get an error message when you run SmartRipper. I don't see how they were going to speed up my ripping speed? Like i said also, i don't even have these files on my Windows XP Pro, and if i really need these files....Then i dunno what im going to do????? -
Of course they are not in WinXP pro. MS decided not to include them as part of the OS anymore. ASPI is not something specific to Smartripper and not specific to MS either...
quote:
What is ASPI?
ASPI stands for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. Originally developed by Adaptec. It is a software layer that enables programs to communicate with SCSI (and ATAPI) devices.
end quote:
Yes it could have crashed the computer very easily... but any piece of software could do that... just run a scanreg /restore from dos and go back to an earlier registry, should fix ya up. On the other hand if it did crash it there is likely something wrong in the system to begin with and it took this to bring it out... anyway good luck. -
not really any point in installing adaptecs aspi layer as many programs dont/cant use this.
The best option is to find forceaspi on the net which is a hacked version and works great with all OS's that i know of (not certain about XP though)
i found my smartripper rarely used the aspi layer to rip anyway, a film really shouldnt take much longer than 30mins to rip -
I really dont think i needed that aspi file because Smartripper started just fine without any errors. The only problem was the speed of the ripping. As far as my uncles computer goes...well i decided to install windows xp on it.
I think the problem was the speed of his dvd-rom drive. He got his comp. in 2000 and the dvd-rom came with the computer so. It must be just too slow.40 hours is just rediculous to rip a movie.
Im just curious as to how fast it will be to rip a movie using the Pioneer AO4?? Im going to be using my comp. with that burner. Any ideas guys? -
Mine ripped DVDs in 25 to 35mins. Depending on howmuch its ripping of course. Also every once in a while I'd hit one that would take quite a while but they were rare.

My PC is only 233 Mhz with about 100 MB ram but it still only takes 20-30 mins to rip a dvd, my Pioneer DVR a04 works fine in it by the way

I never know why people use smart ripper when dvddecryptor works alot better!!! and it allows u to mess around with the aspi. check your controller info in the hardware profiles swithing the dma on on both channels.... this will sort out the bother!!!.. Also how old is the install of win98 as it may need reinstalling if so do that then put the dma on. Now the hard part check in the bios & turn block mode on for your HD to work alot quicker..
Tata for now
Kev!
