You mean the FAT32? That is the file system with which your hard drive is formatted. FAT32 has a file size limit of roughly 4GB. To be able to create files larger than 4GB, you would need to format your drive to NTFS, which has no file size limit (effectively). Luckily, you are running WinXP, which supports NTFS (which is one of the big reasons people that do video capture and editing often dump 98/ME for XP).
You can convert the drive(s) from FAT32 to NTFS without formatting, but you will likely find a complete reformat with NTFS to be much more grief-free in the future. As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
I've been getting tired of the 4 gig limit- running ME and now thinking of switching to XP after reading this thread. I added a 100 gig drive for my video work. If I go to XP, can I format the 100 gig drive to NTFS and leave my other drive as FAT 32 ?

NTFS has a better optimization of data, by converting to NTFS, I actually freed up 500 megs of HDD space.
I would convert your capture hdd right off, but make sure XP is right for you.
If you convert your system HDD to NTFS and you don't like XP, you cannot role back, you have to format the drive. -
I've also noticed NTFS doesn't have ScanDisk when i have to force a reset.

Thanks for the feedback ! I found the conversion to NTSF easy (although DOS commands) and problem-free so far and am happy with XP (so far).

Hi,
I am new to capturing video.
I have a new 40 gig Maxtor 7200 RMP drive.
I was hoping to capture 2 hr videos and then cut it down.
If I use hardware MPEG conversion in capture card What will be the size needed for DVD quality (my source is Svideo Hi8 tapes).
I have Win98SE so I guess I am limited to 4 gig files ?
thanks

Just so you know:
Windows 95/98/98SE/ME doesn't read NTFS, so if you add another D, with NTFS, and have windows ME, it won't exist.
You haevto upgrade to 2000 or XP, I sugest 2000, but once you go XP, you don't go back (some nice features and stuff) -
here is a link to show you how to do it.

i provide this link as a help, not so that people will want to blame me for problems.
