  1. I purposely put this new topic as an addition to my series which get an overwhelmed response which you can find here:

    and
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100155&highlight=

Since the 2 topics above are discussing different issues, I put this topic so that the momentum received at the said forum will not be interfered, and newbies like me can easily find a discussion on a special topics.

    Now, let's get into work:
As my PC details show, I'm using XP pro which I believed still don't have any vfw to wdm wrapper(am I wrong?). Well, I did search and found nothing from the net that can be downloaded to install vfw to wdm wrapper to my XP. Is it really an installer which need to be run on PC to get the thing works?? Or only changing the registry which you can find here: http://virtualdub.org/docs_vfwwdm . This guide is for Win2000...how about Windows XP...??I need that so I can use VirtualDub with no doubt.

  2. I have been trying for a long time to get Vdub working with my WinXP Home system. I have an ATI All-In-Wonder Rage 128 Pro card. I know I have the wrapper as it appears in setup dialogs of Vdub and some other programs. It also shows in the "System" control panel as a "Legacy Video Capture Device".

The problem I have is that when I go to capture in Vdub, it freezes. I hear audio associated with the video coming in, but Vdub stops responding to mouse and keyboard. What's worse, I cannot even kill it using task manager! The system otherwise continues to work OK, but to get rid of the Vdub window I have to reboot.

The vfwwdm32.dll file is version 5.1.2600.0, which I am sure is the one for WinXP, as it was installed by WinXP itself.

Capturing with WDM-base applications such as AMCap, Videostudio 6 and Pinnacle Studio 8 all work OK. I have the same problem with the freeVCR program which is also VFW-based.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Maximum Risk, maybe im missing something but you still haven't said whether you have even tried it. Lucky, you are correct that the file "vfwwdm32.dll" is the wrapper mentioned. when you start virtualdub, enter capture mode. Once there, goto the video button. On the very bottom, if it says "Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)" then you are most definitely using the vfwwdm32.dll, which is the wrapper. Windows 2000 and xp both have done away with vfw based drivers, and have therefore gone to wdm drivers. That is the reason for the wrapper (for the vfw based applications). Lucky, if you are having trouble with capturing, try installing the ati drivers from their site, i think that microsofts probably aren't very good. for those of you using 2000, i suggest getting the new sp3. the vfwwdm32.dll wrapper has been updated in it.
