  1. hey, i have a widscreen movie on my computer as a divx .avi file at 704 x 336. i have tried encoding it with TMPGEnc and playing around with the different aspect ratios because i'm not sure which one will make it the same size as it was in divx format. any suggestions as to how to convert the movie so it doesn't look all streched out on my tv? your posts are greatly apperciated. ps: i don't have on of those fancy widscreen tv's, so don't post about that, thanks.

  2. If original video works right, you can do:

    Letterbox 4:3:
    Dont touch anywhere.

    Anamorphic widescreen 16:9:
    Settings->Video->Aspect ratio 16:9 ntsc/pal

    You are not saying what format you want, but i assume that you want VCD or SVCD. If you are unsure something, use allways wizard or VCD and SVCD templates. With wizard you still can change that Aspect ratio field to aspect ratio you want.

  3. I'm not sure, but some strange reason when I use wizard, tmpegenc (2.57.41.146) sets video arrange method to full screen (without keeping aspect ratio). It should normally be full screen (keep aspect ratio). I think it is rare to have AVI with any other aspect ratio than 1:1.

  5. here's problem i ran into: when i get to the 2nd wizard screen on TMPGenc i see all these different aspect ratios, like 16:9/3:4/2:11 line PAL/NTSC, or 16:9/3:4/2:11 display. which should i pick, if any? also, another question, i tried a few of these different aspect ratios on my movie and in the preview screen it looks streched out and disorented. should it look like this and will it look different on my tv/dvd player on my computer? your help is greatly needed. lastly, yes, i am burning it to a svcd for the highest possible quality. thanks

    Simple, in settings, advanced, make sure source field is set to 1:1 VGA and the Video Arrange Method is full Screen (keep aspect ratio).

    These should be the default settings when convertinga divx

  7. so what does the 1:1vga setting do?
    it keeps the original source as a 1:1 ratio and doesn't change it?

    but doesn't the SVCD change it anyways? cuz it changes it to 480x480,

    but that is no longer wide screen, and on a wide screen t.v. it'll look distorted and stretched.

    for the original source, shouldn't we be choosing the 16:9? cuz that is the ratio of the source video after all....

    aspect ratio has nothing to do with resolution so don't worry about it, thats down to whether you choose pal/ntsc, vcd/svcd. Using what i described earlier will allow a wide screen divx to played on a 4:3 tv letter boxed to the correct aspect ratio

    evening punkster103,

    If you want to see a "widescreen" sample, you can take a look at a
    sample clip I have uploaded (every day or so, you can find a new one)
    It's about 18mb's but, then smaller ones wouldn't really be that worth
    it at times.

    Anyways, This clip I have was, for ie, in widescreen format,
    but in my older ways of doing things in the past, I'd cut the boarders
    but that wasn't exactly the correct way, though it worked all the time.

    I believe the correct way of achieving (and the way I use) is to, in
    tmpg:
    * setting/Aspect ratio: 4:3 display
    * setting/Advanced/Source Aspect ratio: 16:9 display
    * setting/Advanced/[x] Clip frame
    * Top[60] x Bottom[63] . . .this was just an ie of a clip I used vlues
    * [ ] Top mask, and [ ] Bottom mask . . .leave unchecked
    * then, click Arrange Method and
    * select Full screen (keep aspect ratio)
    * [OK]

    OK, so now, you're curious about my sample clip, and you want to see
    what I can produce w/ tmpg, ...right?
    .
    .
    Go to link below, to D/L the sample clip. It's very good quality.
    You be the judge of what level you would catagorize it as such,
    ie * vcd/cvd/svcd/dvd, etc.
    Well, let me know whta you think. Just burn w/ nero, in SVCD format,
    and uncheck [ ] compliant, and you're on your way. Play in great quality
    w/ my Apex AD-1500

    Good luck.
