    I am new to this and have looked around with the search tool.

    If I want to be able to
    rent and backup DVDs
    Convert Avis to DVD and burn them

    Does this require a capture card ?
    Or is this only for those who use VHS to VCD/DVD and DigitalVideo to DVD
    Yes I am a newbie !

    You only need a capture card if you intend to make video from an analog source... i.e. broadcast TV, videotape, laserdisc.

    If you just download stuff from the p2p's and rip DVDs, you can get by just fine with a normal video card.

    all you need is a DVD-ROM and an ASPI layer.


    And get a good ripper like DVD Decrypter.
