  1. Hi people,

I've recently purchased a Liteon 40x12x48x CD Writer and I've been having problems with VCD's I've created on this drive.

I installed the Bundled version of Nero and downloaded VCD Ready Episodes of Dark Angel and I've been burning them onto 80min 'Bulkpaq' CDrs and everytime I reach about 28 mins into the episode, my VCD player freezes up for 2 seconds every minute onwards which is really annoying. at first I thought it was a CD-Media problem as they Bulkpaqs were just new (Purchased from SVP Communications at http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/SVP_Communications_80_Minute_Discs_2.html) but it appears thats not the case. As I then burned the episodes onto my remaining blank 'VIVA STAR' cd-medias and the episodes worked fine.

At this point, I uninstalled the version of Nero that was bundled and restored my older version of Nero that was bundled with my Plextor. I then burned an episode onto my 'Bulkpaq' CD-Media and it worked fine dispite problems earlier....so now I'm left wondering why my Liteon CD-Writer is having problems making VCD's (Yet it's brilliant at making Audio CD's and backups of PC Software).

If anyone can help me out, it will be greatly appreciated.[/url]

  3. The question I have, with the older version of Nero do you still burn at the MAX speed? If you are burning at a Lower write speed to cheap media then you probably are getting better write quality. Also, I noticed that you indicated that the problem seems to occur at 28 minutes. the Liteon drive is a Zoned CLV write drive which means that it writes at different speeds depending on were your at on the disk. At 28Minutes I expect the drive had just kicked into writing at 32X. You can use Nero CD speed to see this. Run it with a Blank piece of media and you can see the Zones and were the drive swtiches to the Higher write speed. Check to see if you have the latest FW.

  4. Okay, I've installed my Liteon Bundled version of 'Nero Burning Rom' again and I ran that Nero CD Speed and noticed there was a little slump around the halfway mark.

I've tested burning the episodes again on the same 'Bulkpaq' CD-Media (Which were the ones I had problems with) and I've burned them at speeds 24 & 32 as oppose to the usual max speed of 40.

The times it freezes has greatly diminished although it did freeze for maybe about half a second (Usually freezes for 3 seconds at regular intervals), it never once froze when burning on 24x so I guess that will do for me. It's still a bit faster than my 16x Plextor and plus I can do 'On The Fly' copying so it's not all bad.

Anyway, problem solved with minor sacrifices.

Thanks RockNRoll & Raagaaman. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. and I'm smiling again

  5. Bascially the faster you burn you run the risk of screwing up your data that's burned on there unless you use PREMIUM CD-Rs like Taiyo Yuden CDs or Ricoh manufactured Ricoh Premiums (80min white/silver). Other than that I don't think cheapo branded CD-Rs can handle 40x or higher burning speeds.

  6. there are no probs with the bulkpaq media & higher speeds as I had about 300!!! but on the down side of cheaper disks they are very thin.. so its best to choose the precession disks for a £1 more as they are alot more reliable & less likely to screw up!

    Kev!

  7. I end up with better results in using Ricoh, Taiyo Yuden and some CMCs. (On a regular basis I use about 650~700 CD-Rs a year)

  8. I have a Lite On 40x12x48 and have found when burning VCD to Fry's "Great Qulaity" 40x CD-Rs at speeds over 12x some of my players have problems but not all. When I burn at 12x I have no problem at all. I did notice the difference in the data track on a CD burned at 40x compared to one burned at 12x.
