  1. who is totally confused about dvd ripping? I agree with other posts on here that some guides are missing obvious steps. Also people use so many different apps!

I have an a04 and a fast pc and would *love* to know the best way to rip a dvd (greater than 4.3 obviously).

    Can anyone help?

  2. Use DVD2SVCD. See the guide under the DVD RIP section at the left. It works in conjunction with either TMPGenc, or CCE for MPEG-2 encoding. I did my first DVD rip this past weekend without any trouble using DVD2SVCD, TMPGenc, and the guide.

    Hope this helps.

Smartripper 2.41 is the most versatile ripper. It allows complete adjustment in file size and stream ripping. Rip only the video and one audio steam to get the smallest file size. I just rippped The Mummy Returns this way and it came out at 4.8GB. I only needed to trim 400MB with Rempeg to make it fit on one DVD-R.

  4. From another relative newb, this is the current "process" that I am using with fairly good success (for DVD to DVD-R on a Pioneer DVR-104):

1). Rip the entire DVD with DVD-Decrypter (make sure to change from the default view to show all files)
2). Run IFOEDIT and strip the extra sound/subtitles from the main movie VOB's.
3). If the main movie + menu < 4.3GB, then I just burn that...otherwise transcode the movie with ReMPEG2. (You will have to use one of the DVD calculators to figure out the best compression ratio).
4). Remux the transcoded video with IFOEDIT (or Scenarist if IFOEDIT causes problems).
    5). Burn with Nero.

It looks like you might be able to combine 1+2 if you use SmartRipper, but I haven't got around to playing with it yet It took me long enough to get comfortable with the basics of the above programs! Good luck and don't get too frustrated...it takes awhile to figure it all out.

  5. I would have to agree with all the steps EnemyWithin takes. I have tried to combine steps 1 and 2 stripping with Smart Ripper, but it seems to make the rest of the process more difficult. I'd rather rip and then strip.

  6. DVD -> VCD
Out of all 10 spindles (50 each), I would say..
    1) smartripper to VOB, the trick is, if under 80mins set to 1 vob, If under 160 set to 2 vob, and so on..
    2) bitrate calc to get the max
    3) Flask directly from VOB to VCD wiith the highest bitrate possible
    4) burn with half speed or under 16X (that is if you have 32x or faster)
    5) come and kick my butts if you don't agreed

there are many different ways to rip, easiest being all files. if this is your needs then any ripper will do. i have to disagree with the earlier post that smart ripper is the most versatile, that award must go to Vstrip, but it's also the biggest pain and hardest to use. the overall best ripper in my opinion is dvd decrypter. i can rip multi pgc movies demuxing the audio and video if i need it. keeping some in vob format, seperate sub files, just way too many possibilities to explain here. go take a look at the doom9 guide and learn it, you will appreciate this app http://www.doom9.org/dvddec.htm
