  2. How would you connect to the internet, and thus to the other PC, if you weren't - connected to the internet?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. You have to be online to download anything.

  4. Exactly! It was a Socratic attempt at answering a question with another that might send them to the next step in their journey to an answer. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish...

  5. Ok guys.............Have this.

There is a way of downloading from p2p and still being able to disconnect and leave it downloading.

I asked a friend about this because he mentioned something about it in the past.

I can get you started but i'm afraid it's over my head.

First you need a shell account somewhere.

Then you connect to the net via the shell and issue the commands through the shell account.

Then you are free to disconnect if you want and the shell will carry on your download although obviously not to your PC but to the shell account space.

He whipped up this diagram to help.
I hope this answers some questions for you coz all it did for me was confuse me.
If you understand how this works then please post back...

Oh yeah.........You need telnet as well I think.

Clever little git is only 15 as well..........

  7. Something like that.

I don't understand it properly but I think you can use this shell as another drive as well.

    ie executing programs from it.

Personally I think it's a lot of messing though.

It seems to be like having your own private dump that you can fill up and retrieve at your liesure.

  8. So you still need to download from the shell account to your pc, so whats the advantage in doing this than downloading straight to your pc from the p2p network.

You still need to be online for the same amount of time to actually get your file into your PC, just instead of transferring the file once you are doing it twice, from the p2p to the shell account and then from the shell account to your pc (which you need to be online for)

  9. Like I said I don't understand it fully so I don't really know the advantages of it.

But let's say for instance you are at school or work and find something that's not going to be available when you get home.

You could download to the shell then get it back whenever you want.

I know there are easier ways but this may just be one example of the advantage of downloading while you can be offline.

I'm not defending it and I will probably never have a use for it but it's there and someone else might.

  10. MY ISP has told me that with their cable modem service, u can have your computer turned off and you can still send and receive information as to let the isp know you are still online. However, you can't dl anything specifically but something just to throw in there
