Converting from 2 HD's

Hello,

I've been looking (and searching) but can't seem to find an answer.

I've read that 2 HD's are better (faster) for converting movies.
I've got 2 partitions on my HD, is this also better or doesn't it make any difference.

I think what people are talking about are 2 HD's set up as a RAID 0 array.

Converting (encoding) does not actually need faster disk access, its need faster cpu. For video editing and capturing then it is different story, you will need faster disk speed for the large amount of data transfer. The advantage of having 2 HDD is one for read and one for write, you read the source from one disk and write your output to the other, so it will be faster than read and write to the same HDD. Obviously, one HDD with 2 partition will not have this advantage.

In fact, it will have the opposite effect. Since your read areas are in one section of the HD and the write areas are in another, your R/W head will be spending a lot of time just seeking these areas. A millisecond lost here and a millisecond lost there... before you know it, you have a lot of real lost time. I estimate (from my own experiences) that this kind of accessing will cost you about 30% extra time (when compared to a 2 HD approach).
