I received a couple of discs encoded to svcd standard however my standalone dvd player wont play them, is it possible for me to encode them to vcd, as my player will then play this format.

You should be able to play this on your PC if you have DVD player software (even on a regular CD-ROM drive). I'd be looking at Sony's website to see if there is a BIOS update for your DVD player to make it like SVCD's (unlikely, but possible). However, you should be able to find the .MPG files on your SVCD and re-encode them with TMPEGnc to make a regular VCD.
I'll add your story to my list of reasons not to buy Sony products. -
cheers for replying but when I said standalone dvd player I meant of the domestic hifi type, sorry for the confusion.
If I want to re-encode the disc to vcd I presume that I will have to save it to the hard drive first is this correct?? -
I bought a sony last year as well and grew tired of trying to make compatible vcd's so I went and bought the newest apex 1531. Works like a champfor 100 bucks and plays just about every svcd/vcd rip you throw at it. I still use my standalone sony for rented or bought DVD's and just use the apex for the rips.

Now run these through TMPGenc using the VCD template, After this has finished, Burn the MPeg to a CD using the VCD option in Nero.
You should now have VCD that will work on your DVD player.

I don't think you will be able to play a vcd on your stand alone player if you can't play a svcd.

I suggest testing a vcd before you go to the bother. Most dvd players can be adapted to play vcd format anyhow. -

They've cost me a couple of quid in wasted disks!

It may be the CDR that your player has trouble with rather than the VCD format. Sonys are notorious for being picky with the type of media they will play. You could try a different brand of CDR or try a CDRW, as the reflectivity wavelength of a CDRW is closer to that of an original disc than a CDR.
