  1. I have a movie that is just over the limit to put on DVD-R. I've stripped everything I can but slightly over. Is there to re-encode just one of the VOB files to make it smaller so that it will fit. I don't want to encode the whole movie just the last VOB file.

    Thanks

Rempeg can transcode the vob to lower bit rate to reduce file size. Ifoedit(don't use Ver 0.91,get ver 0.90) will remux the trancoded file back into the vob. Both programs are available in the tools section on Vcdhelp site.

  3. Thanks Wulf, but how do you handle the audio within the VOB?

Put the vob you want to transcode in a different directory. Use Ifoedit's "create ifo files" option to create ifo's for the file . then transcode in REmpeg. Open Ifoedit and open the ifo you created, cliick "Vob extras" . You will see an option to remex your m2v file. Select it and Ifoedit will merge your trancoded file back into the vob and it will play normally, with audio etc.

  5. Strip out the audio first. Run Rempeg to adjust the video and use ifoedit or other to remux the video and audio. I tried rempeg without removing the audio and got some very strange results.

I have used the method i described many times to fit DVD on minDVD disks and have never expierenced a problem. Use Ver. 0.90 of Ifoedit because Ver. 0.91 has a bug in it that causes the remuxed file to stumble on playback. Ver 0.90 works every time.
I have transcoded all the Star trek episodes to miniDVD with perfect results.

  7. Okay wulf, I'm not a total newbie but I can't get this to work. I copy the VOB in this case VTS_01_5.VOB to a new directory. It is by itself. Open up IFOEDIT 090 and open the VOB file. I select CREATE IFO's. It asks me for a place to save it, I say the same directory as the vob file. I click save and nothing happens. No IFO file is created.

    I forgot,you have to rename the file : vts_01_1.vob
Ifoedit will only work if the vob is vts_01_1.vob
