  1. I am not sure which will be better to get. The Terapin VCd recorder or a capture card. I want to record vhs and camcorder tapes to videocd and alos tv shows or movies as well. I sthe Terapin worth the $300? The cheapest place I found was etronics.com for about $300 shipped. Are there other VCD recorders?

    Hi,

I don't know anything about capture cards, but I would NOT recommend getting a Terpin VCD recorder.

I had one about a year and a half ago and the picture quality (from broadcast tv) was very poor. Even the things recorded directly from DVD weren't that great.

I now have a Panasonic DMR-E20 DVD recorder and I love it. They are going for around $600 on Ebay. I bought mine for $780 in January so the price is steadily dropping.

You can also get generic blank DVD for under a dollar. If you can afford it, I would buy a dvd recorder. If not, just save up your money. As far as I'm concerned the Terapin would be a waste of money if you care about video quality.

    Anyway, good luck.

As a Terapin owner who is happy with his purchase, I would not recommend buying a Terapin if the majority of the discs you intend to make are sourced from television or VHS video cassettes. Terapins are best for copying from DVD via the S-Video cable only.

  4. Buy a ProVideo PV-231 or 233, as it has the same exact winbond chipset that the Terapin has, but with out the limitations of the Terapin. Will only cost you $85 to $115 too!

A VCD recorder for $85-115??? WHERE??????

I ahve a terapin and seems to OK from most sources. What 'limitations' does the ProVideo overcome that the terapin have? I record VideoCDs on regular blank CD-r and CD-RW media.

I would like to learn more.

The ProVideo PV-231 and 233 are video capture cards that do hardware mpeg1 real-time compression. You will need a burner to make VCD's. The "limitations" are not being able to edit the video, tweak the video etc.

  7. As AntnyMD stated, the Terapin works well with a high output source such as a DVD player or DSS satellite system. For optimal playback use a DVD player with an enhanced black level feature using the s-video or component connections. I have received favorable results from recordings made from VHS and 8mm tapes.
