Boy who twice faked drowning dies in pool

MONTOURSVILLE -- An 11-year-old boy who twice faked drowning to get attention might have suffered a heart attack when he drowned in a neighbor's pool, authorities said.

John Szarko Jr. was retrieving rings from the floor of a neighbor's pool Thursday when others saw him floating face down in the shallow end. Others at the pool party performed CPR until rescue workers arrived, but John was pronounced dead on arrival at Williamsport Hospital.

Tim Ungard, who was at the pool party, said he twice pulled John out of the pool Thursday after the boy faked drowning. "He would yell, 'Help.' Then he would go under the water and then he would come back up. I would pick him up out of the water, and I would ask him, 'Are you OK?' And he would say, 'Yeah, I'm just playing around. I'm playing like I'm drowning,'" said Ungard. "I kept telling him, 'Don't do that. You make me panic. ... You better quit that because we don't know if you're drowning,'" Ungard said.

  2. i used to work as a lifeguard. i hate when kids do that shit...best way to stop them, wait for a stretch of 90 degree days, and tell them they're banned from the pool for a week. when they're hangin' on the fence, sweatin' their ass off, watching all their other snot-nosed friends in the pool, they fall in line real quick...
