  1. ok, i am reading about how to hack a standalone dvd player and stuff, like something to do with region free and crap....well, what the heck do they mean regionfree and hacking DVD players....what is the point of it? can it help you play more media or what?

  2. DVDs are regionally coded - US/CANADA - Region 1, EUROPE - region 2, region 0 = play anywhere and so on. So a movie bought in the US (region 1) will not play on an unhacked European player (region 2), most hacks let you select the region for your player. This is only really useful to us poor saps in Europe who usually get the latest releases a couple of months after the US. Other hacks allow you to remove Macrovision (copy protection) from disks allowing to record to VHS or something (this usually involves modifing the hardware).
