I hope that someone can help me with this, I have been reading these forums for a while now and ages ago I read a post about how you could create a new account where most of the O.S tasks were disabled (i.e Norton, Zone alarm etc) so that the cpu took less of a hit and you got less frame drops.
I have tried to search for the article but I cannot find it but I sure could do with finding out what to do as tonight I have just captured 240 seconds of tv through the Hauppauge card and I ended up with 600 dropped frames, during the capture I shut down Zone alarm and this slowed down the frame drop but I could do with starting with a clean slate.
If someone could direct me in the direction of this thread then I would be more than happy.
    Thanks in advance Paul.

  2. sounds fairly simple.

go to your control panel, then "users" and the wizard should take you through it.

once you've got your username and PW set up, log in with those, and go to start > run and type in "msconfig". click the 'startup' tab, and you'll be able to see which programs you have running when your computer starts up. it should be safe to deselect them all.

click apply, and restart and log back in.. voila!

    Thanks for the help
I created a new account 'CAPTURE', did what you suggested by deselecting all options and then I tried again.
I still get frame drops but about 90% less than before, I assume now that it is down to my h/d only being ata66 5,400 rpm and my cpu being a 450MHz overclocked to 600MHz and also the signal to the tuner card not being perfect.
Maybe it's a good excuse to build the xp2000+ system that I have been hankering after together with a nice 7200rpm 120gig h/d

Try Running msconfig to stop some of the background programs from running. start>run>msconfig
May the force be with you.
