  2. For standard VCDs, the community is divided on whether Panasonic MPEG Encoder (Adobe Premiere plugin or stand-alone) or TMPGEnc yields better video quality.

The last time there was a poll (only a small number of people participated), it was about 3 for Panasonic and 7 for TMPGEnc.

Ultimately, it gets down to your own eyes and your perception of quality.

Panasonic produces softer, but smoother video while TMPGEnc produces sharper but blockier video at VCD bitrates. Which one looks worse is again, up to you.

I personally like Panasonic's video for standard VCD...

You can get the trial version here: http://www.networkserve.co.jp/mpeg/index_e.html

Don't ask for the full version.

  3. I believe there s also a speed issue.
Panasonic is slower than TMPGEnc by quite a margin. I personally use Panasonic because I like the ease of use and user-friendliness and do not bother so much about an 8 hour conversion time since I let the PC run all night.

so i hear this panosonic plugin is the best for ripping dvds
Actually this is completely wrong. Panasonic is a MPEG-1 encoder not a ripping tool.

    Probably ("yes" to my ears).

But, with TMPGEnc, you use use a better encoder as a plug-in for audio (e.g., tooLame).
