I just bought a lite on 16x dvd drive and when i try to rip dvd's using smartripper it only rips at .1x-.3x,what gives.Using my old 8x toshiba dvd drive it would rip at 2x-5x.Has anyone else had this problem and is there a firmware upgrade/hack to fix this as i find nothing on lite on's website,

try this page for an update on your dvd drive this should sort out the problem i got it from www.liteonit.com the site is as follows:

most dvd players that rip slowly only require a flash update the scary bit is doing it right, in dos mode. but with liteon products the flash normally works in windows and should therefore not be a problem. -
if you don't have any joy with the flash and it all goes wrong get the pioneer 106s dvd player it can be flashed in window without any worries and also reads any dvd disc you can throw at it
you can get it cheap from www.overclockers.co.uk its the best dvd reader i have had not the fastest that was the panasonic 16 speed but that couldn't read every dvd and neaded flashed in dos mode and even after the flash it still wouldn't read every dvd maybe the drive was faulty hope this helps.
