  1. Hello

I've followed sefy's dvd ripping guide and downloaded forceASPI since I'm running XP and i've done this month's ago with success. Back then I was able to rip dvd's at an average of about 9x speed. After a hardrive failure, i've re-installed XP and downlaoded the latest versions of all my vcd making aides (dvd2avi_176+, forceaspi17, TMPGEnc-2.55.38.142, and the latest smartripper). Now I can't rip beyond 2X speed. What's wrong? The only additinal software I didnt have previously is WinDVD4. I'd appreciate any assistence.

  3. check your drive to see if you have Ultra DMA or PIO transfer mode enabled - DMA is generally the mode you want

  4. Check for the followings:

    1) Latest IDE Drivers
    2) Latest ASPI Layer installed and works properly
    3) Make sure the DVD and HDD are NOT on the same channel

Let me know if anything helped or not.

  5. Sefy,

What do you mean by same channel? In Device Manager under properties, they're both set to location "0,0". Do you mean this?

  6. Same IDE Channel, are they connected on the same IDE ?
For best performance, DVD should be set to Master on the Secondary IDE.

  7. Thank you Sefy. I moved my dvd drive to the secondary slot and got back up to speed Why does it work like that?

  8. Well, the explanation is simple, the HDD is much faster then your DVD drive, but when they are both on the same channel, the speed is reduced for both to match the slowest drive, and that is what reduces your ripping speed.

Yes; IDE hard drives can share a cable (channel) with other IDE hard drives, and IDE DVD/CD drives can share a cable (channel) with other IDE CD/DVD drives, but you should avoid having an IDE hard drive share a cable (channel) with an IDE CD/DVD drive (because it can bog down the hard drive something awful).

Keep the hard drives (master and slave) on the primary channel (or hooked up to your RAID controller if you have one and use it), and keep the CD/DVD drives (master and slave) on the secondary channel to avoid these headaches.

  11. I see what you mean, I did have it set up master slave but had hard drives on Secondary and cd/dvd drives on primary. I have switched them around and rip speeds are back up again. This is weird cause I didn't switch them around since I reinstalled XP. oh well its fixed at least.
    thanks

  12. does it make any difference if you have cdr and dvd-r on the same ide.. but the cdr as master and dvd-r as slave? will it be faster to have the dvd-r as master?

  13. In most cases it shouldn't make a difference, but since DVD drives are in some cases faster then the CDR/CDRW drives, it would be best to have the DVD as the Primary and the CDRW as the Slave.

Make sure faster drive is Master, and the slower drive is the Slave drive.
