Very new to DVD have been dowmloading number of files,avi/DivX and just about finished Spiderman.
I have burned an avi,and all is ok,but how would I burn avi files larger than,an 80 min cd....I presume they have yo be split onto 2 discs,
My question is how do I burn avi/divx files downloaded which are larger than 1 normal cd (split) and is it the same format to do the same for Mpeg (Spiderman for example)
Any help appreciated....am travelling abroad next week, and trying to take laptop with as many movies as possible......airport boredom.
Thanks

Use Vdub to split large AVI's
Once the AVI's are split, just add them to the CD-R like you would any other file.
Mpeg files can also be placed on the CD-R in the same way, use TMPGEnc to split them if they are too large.
You have not mentioned VCD, so I guess you do not wish to make any, just want to store the AVI/mpegs to be played by media player. However what size hard drive does the laptop have, why not just store them on it ? -
Thanks for reply.
Laptop has 40 gb....but plan to take at least 5/6 movies to middle east next week. Some of them are rather large, although most are avi,and will probably fit onto 1 cd Spiderman which I have just about downloaded is a good bit larger and in Mpeg format.
My friend has a dvd player (Standalone) and my son has playstation 2 with dvd and he probably wants to play as well. My priority is only to play on pc or laptop....don't know enough about dvd to say if playstation or dvd player will accept avi cd burns or Mpeg cd burned disks..advice if possible.
Once I have completed Spiderman d/l I will try to burn to disk...hopefully 2 cds will cover although I don't know.
Using Roxio cd creator plat to burn although I also have Nero built in with 24 speed burner....Roxio seems easier.
Thanks for last posting....... -

Convert Spiderman to DivX !, that will shrink it down. However if you want to play them on a DVD player or other machine that supports VCD, there is no getting out of all the conversions ahead.
If as you say, your priority is to play on your PC, stick with AVI's No conversion, less storage space, you don't even need to burn disks, your laptop has more than enough roomAnd you don't need to smuggle VCD's through customs !

Thanks for replies....seems like a friendly forum, unlike some I have been on....
If i read correctly...Yes I would get a large number of movies onto my laptop, but I wish to use laptop and desktop,so it probably would be better to burn to disk,I also have had recent hard disk crashes on desktop....probably trojan infections from Kazza...and don't want to lose current downloads,(Taken too long to download)
If I use Easy CD to burn,do I use data or VCD format, the only 2 movies I have burned so far have been ok with data settings and have been avi files (DivX Avi)
I currently have Spiderman sitting on my Hard Drive and really don't know what to do with it........I do wish to burn to disk but looking at the file size it seems massive and file code format =mpg
Do I convert to Avi ?will this reduce the size and how do I split the file in order to fit onto CD's size showing is 1,224,603,504 what this means i have no idea.
If I convert to Avi do I use Vitudub.....looking for something VERY easy to use.
appreciate your last postings...once I get back from Mid East I plan to find out a lot more about DVD etc.....only started using this week and subject seems very complex.
This is going to sound like a very stupid question so forgive me.....why can't you just use a disk copy prog to copy dvd type disks -
To continue saga......avi files downloaded are too large to burn to disk....advice please....do i try to cut and burn onto 2 disks...or try to compress using Vdub.......if i use vdub to compress what should mt compression be Divx 5.02 Codec ? or other

Ok, well when you have finished your current downloads, un-install Kazaa, then use Ad-Aware to remove all the spywear. Then Install "Kazaa lite" it’s a hacked version of Kazaa with no spywear, latest version also has "Speed Up" .
If you want to get as much as possible on those disks, and don’t want to play them on a DVD player, you just use DivX Avi files, and burn them as data disks.
Same for Spiderman, the size you have specified would normally fit on 2 VCD disks, and you would need to cut it in half with TMPGEnc > Merge/cut But again if your happy with data disks, you could fit that onto one disk as an AVI.
To fit it on 1 disk, you need to load it into Vdub, then select
Video > Full processing mode
Video > Compression > DivX Slow motion > Configure
On the configuration change the Data rate to 300
Key frames "Every 10"
Next select Audio > Full processing mode
Audio > Compression
Select either MP3 or DivX audio from left and 64kb 44.1Hz Stereo (Or close) on the right
Now select SAVE AS, save movie...
After a few minuets abort save, and test the output, if the quality is still as high as the original, you can reduce the data rate from 300 to 250 and try again. The smaller the number the smaller the AVI will be.
Same with audio, select mono for a much smaller size, after you have experimented with those 2 and are happy with the output, convert the whole movie. It should come out at around 700Mb and hopefully fit on one disk.
DVD disks are protected, So far ! There is no software that will do a disk to disk, so you need to rip the original using a DVD ripper, then convert the output to the format you want.
If the AVI's you downloaded are to big to fit on a disks, you might consider re-encoding them with DivX 3.11 as shown above. If you don’t want to re-encode simply load them into Vdub for edit.
1, Load AVI
2, move slider to the end to see how many frames there are, and divided that number by 2
3, Move to start of movie, click the black arrow to mark the start
4, move to center of movie (Number of Frames divided by 2)
5, click the yellow key frame, back once and mark this as end
6, you will now have the first half of the movie highlighted.
Select Video > Direct stream copy
Select Audio > Direct stream copy
7,Save as "part1.avi"
Now you need to highlight part 2, you are already in the middle of the movie at a key frame, so mark this as start, then move to the end of the movie and click back 1 key frame, and mark this as end. This highlights the second half of the movie.
8, save as "part2.avi"
Done.... -
Thanks for advice
I do not recognise any of the config settings....am i using the right programme....d/ VirtualDub 1.4.10 and Compression settings based around Divx 5.02 and none of the setting you suggested are present
The only DivX present on the compression chart is 5.02 Codec.and the settings are different from your suggested.
Same with Audio no DivX optios present on table chart.......I am getting lost.
Have attempted to compress an avi using DivX 5.02 and it is currently running, but projected file sixe is same as original so i must be doing something wrong.
No options on VirtualDub for any other than DivX 5.02 ? -

Oops, double post, Ah So you don't have the other codec's installed, only DivX5. You need to download and install them before they will be available for use.
The one I refer to is DivX 3.11 Alpha, the greatestWithout which we would never had got started, yes DivX 5 can be used but obviously the settings are in a different place.
On the DivX codec (Tab) you will see the Encoding bitrate, lower that number to get smaller sizes. On the general parameters (Tab) it shows the key frames, I normally set key frames at every 10, but the default there is 300, OK for playback but difficult to edit afterwards. -
Thanks again...your help appreciated.
D/L Divx Alpha...opened V dub set DivX MPEG LOW MOTION....SET 300 keyframe 10.....into Audio full compression....Divx audio set 64 44 divx...saved as test file......video ok but sound high pitch,or too fast....any suggestions.
Tried higher 500 on mpeg still the same ...tried High motion still same.
Doing something on audio will help? -
Ah yes, Use the MP3 audio, and select 96kbs but make sure its 44.1kHz stereo.
But if your sample rate is different that wont be any good, if you click
File > File Information
Look at the list you will see the "Sample rate" that your current file is using, if that's not 44.1Khz then select one from the list to match it.
If it says 11.025 then select 32Bit 11.025Khz stereo, etc etc on DivX or MP3 -
Thanks...I must be driving you to frustration....
No MP3 File on Audio......have reduced Video to 300 and left Audio for no compression...test results ok....currently running....so will tell you later how it goes.
Under file information.....22000mz........tried at this but sound way out of sinc....If I leave sound compression to nil...will movie still be ok....
Projected size id way inside 700 mb and shows 350 which will fit on disc...but no mP3 FILE ?.
iF THIS WORKS WILL TRY AND CONVERT AND COMPRESS sPIDERMAN WHICH IS OVER IGB IN SIZE. -
Mmm, you don't have an MP3 codec ? that unusual, did I mention the Nimo codec pack, I seem to be advertising that thoughout this forum.
Well before I had to say go here for this codec and here for this one, now they are all in one its a lot easier.
I think my MP3 is the one I installed from www.goldwave.com (Add-ons) Lame is there and Ogg Vorbis and BladeEnc, been using them for a long time.
http://www.goldwave.com/release.html if you want the MP3 plug-ins, not to mention the great audio editor which has been around for a very long time, unlike other programs that have copied it, like cool edit
You need to compress the audio, it can take as much room as the video. -
you can fin aprox 800 mb of avi on a CD too, with Mode 2 CD Maker
Well, I am the slime from your video.
Oozin' along on your livin'room floor.
