  1. I have a western digital 30GB 5400 rpm hard drive which i use solely for capturing (AIW 128 pro.) I noticed though that i'm losing too many frames (close to 5%) when capturing SVCD format using VDub. Do i need a higher specs on my hard drive or do i need to tweak some settings on my machine?

Your hard drive should be good enough...its usally the settings that you capture at that really effect this a lot. Some will not capture at more than anythingX240 without a lot of dropping. But thats no help wanting a SVCD res of 480x480.
I dont have that card or I would give you a specific answer.
Some one will most certainly chime in on this.

Well said, it might be a P2-233, or it might be an XP2200+/P4-2.53GHz, or somewhere in between. Knowing more is essential, but I'm betting the CPU is a bit on the low side and thus CPU utilization is at 100% and that's still not cutting it (I have to guess, of course).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

    Hi,

I've captured a lot of DV stuff (9:24 minutes takes 2 GB) on a ATA66 5400 rpm 60GB HD without any frame drops. I'd look somewhere else for the problem.

  7. The only thing that I can suggest is to run msconfig.exe from the Start>>Run menu and see what kind of stuff takes away the CPU cycles. I can capture at much larger resolutions without frame drops WITH recompression and my 700 Mhz Athlon.

BTW, VirtualDub comes with an HD benchmarking utility. Tried that?

Check if the harddrive is primary master or secondary master and not slave after the cdrom or the burner.

  9. If you're running anything, try rebooting, closing vereything down and capture only with VD open. I don't think it's your HD but it is 5400rpm... go get a faster one =)

Is your HD share the same cable with your CD-RW? if it is then move the CD-RW to the other IDE connection.
