  1. How do I setup VCDEasy (or VCDCompser) to burn an anamorphic wide screen VCD/SVCD so that when I play it on my stand-alone DVD player, it automatically switches to letter box (I have a 4:3 TV)?

    thanks,
    Dean

Correct me if I'm wrong, but (S)VCDs are set to 4:3, in order to get a 16:9 or 2.15:1 you have to encode your MPEG files with "black bars" , it doesn't swtich modes or anything...

  3. I'm thinking that there must be a way to use anamorphic aspect. At lease according to the uwasa site, the S/VCD specifications support anamorphic wide screen including auto switching, but I just can figure out how to get VCDEasy (VCDImager?) to use it, and have the DVD player auto switch.

    http://www.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/svcd/overview/#technical_features

"SVCD supports 16:9 (anamorphic wide screen) image aspect ratio. (Actually, it has always been possible to store 16:9 material in anamorphic format - even on a VCD 2.0 disc or VHS tape - but maybe some SVCD players can now also tell the TV set to automatically switch to the right mode by using wide screen signalling methods.)"

    During conversion I have manged to create anamorphic VCD/SVCD using TMPGEnc with the following;

In "settings" click on "advanced" tab and set the following

source aspect ratio to "16:9 display"

Video arrange method to "Full screen (Keep aspect ratio)"

But I have not worked out away for it to auto wide my TV like PAL DVDs do

Not many or maybe no dvd player support anamorphic svcds. I haven't seen any that automatically fixes it.

Yeah, that's where i'm at now. I can store the anamophic, but the dvd won't display it ltr box on my 4:3 tv.

I was hoping it was an authoring problem. I have a pioneer 525 DVD. there doesn't happen to be a list of the players that can handle anamorphic SVCDs?

In any case, I guess I'll just have to make two versions (ltr box and anamorphic) of my projects...

buy a wide screen TV or does your existing TV have a 16:9 mode?

  8. In TMPGEnc you can set the playback format by by going to Settings|Video|Aspect Ratio and setting it to 16x9.

This is different than previously suggested because it is not referring to the Source, it is referring to the file that will be created.

A wide screen TV would be great--but currently, I can't afford one. I wanted to create an anamorphic svcd that would play letter boxed on my 4:3 TV, and that same svcd would play full screen on a wide screen tv (when I hopefully do get one).

I had played around with both source and target format types. If I remember correctly, I did get TMPGENC to create a letter boxed aspect ratio, but then-I think-the resulting svcd was not anamorphic (remaining at 480 lines vertical). Maybe I'm wrong on that...When I get a chance, I'll test again. If I'm remembering wrong, I'll post an update.
