My DVD Player says it can play VCD's but it says in the manual that it won't accept CD-ROM, CD-R, and DVD-ROM discs. So the what do I use to put my media on then? My DVD player is a ProScan PS8680Z. ProScan is somehow affiliated with RCA. I thought the standard medium to use would be CD-R? Correct me if I'm wrong.

there are original VCDs. it'll probibly play those.
Have you tried burning playing cd-r or cd-rw? there's a chance it can play them even if the manual say no.

take a look in the dvd player list:

it can play cd-r. but picky as hell it seams.

I haven't tried yet. I'm just getting into it all now. In the past I remember trying to play a copy of "Art of War" that I rented from my school and it wouldn't play. It may have been VCD or something similar, I don't know? It looked like a bought copy with the proper case and everything, but nowadays there are a lot of VCD's and stuff out there being sold as regular DVD's. I guess I'm wondering if that is a ba sign or not. Reading everybody's posts it sounds as though it's a lot of trial and error in getting the right CD-R's or CD-RW's to play properly in your DVD player. Are there any safe buys when it comes to CD-R's and CD-RW's?

    There is no sure-to-work cd-r or cd-rw.

it depends on the player. some players play anything some nothing, cdr/rw wise.
your seams to be a real bitch since the posts in the list says: NO, well some cheap light ones.

to make it even more complicated, you can not be sure you get the same thing when buying the same brand twize. it all comes down the the factory, and lots of brands (if not moast) get from where they pay less.
