  1. Hello everyone
Well im a 'newbie' to vcd's and this forum. Actually i have a vcd player and lots of vcd's from a friend in singapore.
But im new to making and burning my own vcd's and i have some quetions which you will all probably find easy to answer:

    Firstly:
Why does everyone say nero burning rom is so bad for vcds? Is it just the converter on nero that sucks? I mean, can you burn a pre-converted mpeg-1 onto a vcd using nero?

    Secondly:
I want to copy Miss Congeniality vcd for my sister:
When you open up the cd-rom drive on your computer and click explore on the vcd, i saw all these little folders (karaoke, mpegav ect), If i copy all these to my hard drive and burn it into a cd-r, will my vcd player recognise it as a vcd?
What about if i directly copy the vcd from the cd-rom and burn it onto a cd-r? Will it recognise this as a vcd?

    Thirdly:
I plan to use Panasonic mpeg-1 converter to convert some large (700mb+) Divx DVDRIP files to mpeg-1 PAL. My computer is only a (dont laugh!) Pentium 3 and it says it will take 64 hours to convert one. IIs there anything that can speed up this process. I try to split the files in two, but all the software ive used to try and do that ends up wrecking the computer.

    Fourthly:
What happens when a NTSC VCD is played on a PAL TV? or vice versa.

    Fithly:
On some movies off KAZAA, there are symbols like [TMD] or [SMR] imprinted over the screen, are these brand names or just reffering to the quality of the movie?

    Sixthly:
Why did i have to go to Malaysia to get my vcd player? Why cant they be sold where i live (perth, WA)??

I think thats it. I hope i got all the codes right in this post. sorry if ive been a total b@stard and asked too many questions but i figured id kill six birds with one stone. Any answers to any of the questions would be greatly appreciated

  2. 1) the converter does suck. another reason could be is because it has been said that it does not handle bin/cue vcd images too well. and yes you can load a pre-converted mpeg-1 file in to nero. another reason may be is because you have to pay (heh) for nero, and some people think it sucks because of that reason, so they side with the freeware tools and discredit nero.

    2) if you copy the files to your harddrive and them burn them to a cd-r, your dvd/vcd player may not see it correctly becuase you may burn it as a mode2 disc, when vcd should be burned in mode1. so doing a 1:1 should work just fine.

    3) if you insist on using the panasonic encoder, then it very well may take 64 hours. i would suggest using the great divx to vcd guide sefy levy made. it requires tmpenc which is free, and good. i have a pentium 3 (800mhz) as well and it doesnt take it 64 to do standard divx to vcd encode.

    4) i have 2 dvd players, the sanyo dwm370 & the apex ad-1100w, i've played pal vcd's on an ntsc television on them, and they work just fine. you should check your players manual to ensure they will work. if not, you can convert them through tmpgenc to your correct television system.

    5) those are the "pirateers" who made the movie. there is also another guy who put a dropping Z down the movie at times.

    6) they probably can be sold in your area, its just that they arent to popular outside of asian area's. in my opinion the main reason for the popularity of vcd players is the cheapness of the vcds and massive piracy.. also quality reason, cd's dont degrade in quality, as apposed to vhs.

    7) i'm sure there will be some trivial things people will dispute as to my answers, but that happens with everything.

  3. for the 2nd question, it's no, definitely.
the reason is that the file system of a simple CD that you burn is ISO9660 and the file system of a vcd is CDFS (there's more space on it...)
to burn a vcd from another vcd, you just have to copy it directly (or make an image on your HD)
    with nero it's cd copy...
    Rico.
