Fairly new to DV but doing pretty good so far. Had problems with frame drops but installed dedicated hd and now "0" drops. What I am wondering is how good is "good" or "great". I know this is subjective and I may be so close to as good as I can get that I might be wasting hours researching and trying to do better. I am capturing DV from miniDV camcorder using Ulead Video Studio 6 with 1.1 Athlon, 512, Yamaha burner, and dedicated hd, firewire input. I would say that my VCD is about 90-95% of preview quality. I am getting good color, etc....just a little pixilation that is barely noticeable mainly in scenes when I move the camera too fast. Should I experiment with performance settings, try new software or be happy that I got so close right in the beginning?? Thanks

Without getting into technical quality issues

"good" is where you look at the video and say - "Hmm, I can live with that and watch it without bitching to my friends/family"

"great" is where you look at the video and can say "Wow, that came out much better than I thought"

I think you can work out - "crap"

"good" question as they say. Without going to extremes, you should be able to get good results with DV using xVCD or even SVCD. When I started using DVD-R, I finally saw great. Basically looks like the original DV tape played into the TV.

  4. Referring to your 'what is great' question...

Great is when you can watch the input and eventual output side by side and ask a friend to guess which is which.

When you've seen it, you'll feel like king dong.
The internet is NOT purely porn! There's information about drugs, crime, etc. too
