when you download avis and watch them on your puter can they be improved to just watch on my puter or is it just hit and miss at the quality and does encoding them to mpeg improve the quality thanks.

No you cannot improve the video quality.
The audio quality can be slightly improved. Example you can get rid of hissing or adjust the vulume.
