  1. Aside from VLC or Pot player I'm looking for a good player with screen control better than those.
Right now I'm using MKV Cutter from MKV Toolnix which I use regularly. That can skip through the video forward and back incrimentally or with arrows by keyframe.

VLC and such-- pretty cryptic if it has such a function. On the small screen I'm using to transcribe some hard coded subtitles to move to a similar play, the time stamps are almost illegible in MKV Cutter.

The screen layout I'm seeking would look like the player in Subtitle Edit in full screen, but having the control features a better free editing program could have and visible for use.

A further description of the project is: one source, has hardcoded subs. The target is the same content from a different production
which has AI generated subs from the French, then translated in English. So the hardcoded accurate subtitle from the maker of the new product I'll transpose on the French to English word salad.

I've got about 8 minutes done but for me it's an important adventure. That earlier one will not come around again with subtitles in English from the source.

Is there a spell checker for this text box? How do I turn it on if so?

  3. Sorry dave. It's an unusual situation. Without all the background I want to better be able to move back and forth on the time line of video play than I get from VLC or Potplayer which are the two players I regularly use.

For simple navigation on the time line using the cursor, perhaps either Vdub2 or Avidemux.
But I don't think they will display soft subs

  5. Thanks for answering. I am working on the problem.

First, the MKVCutter was a more recent untested version. I used videohelp software to find an older one. I think that got rid
of a display problem. (somehow that test version was showing an audio track graph or something. The test program probably should have been withdrawn)

The source MKV is very high rez 1920x1080. To get an older version of MKVCutter to display it better I'm trying
a Handbrake recode to lower the rez.

To your point, the subtitles are hardcoded, but AVIsynth and such I always had difficulty using.

    Avisynth?
I think I mentioned AviDemux; it's easy to use and responds well.
Give it a try. What are the issues?
What wrong with using the display in SE 4?

  7. I was not reading carefully. AVI Demux is something I've used so will give that a try for this.

As to SE 4. I'm using that to fix the subs but have to copy the fixes into that. I'm using MKVCutter (or AVI Demux) to write out
the hardcoded subtitles to copy into Subtitle Edit. It's a manual process that will take time.

  8. Solved.

    Dave,

AVI Demux is a good solution for this. I normally ever used it to make fades in and out. The buttons work nicely to move forward or back. And no problems handling the resolution.

    Thanks for the good suggestion.
