  1. Graphedit was a useful tool for understanding multimedia in Windows in the early days. Unfortunately it has been abandoned by Microsoft. The version currently in their SDK is copyright 1992-2003. It does not support any formats that were not used by Microsoft that time period.

Is there any tool that performs similar functions, but knows about formats like MP4?

GraphEdit does not support any formats at all. It never has and it never will. It’s just a visual tool for building filter graphs. It uses the codecs that are installed on your system to render various formats.

But I bet you already knew that. I bet your “question” is a set-up for the announcement for GraphStudioNext 0.7.2.82. And if so, then that means you’re being disingenuous – which is considered a fault in most modern societies.

The problem with ‘white lies’ like this is that is that some idiot might actually believe you (when you say that it does not support any formats that were not used by Microsoft circa 1992-2003). They will rush out and buy new computers – even tho their current computers – when equipped with modern codecs, might do the job.

It also destroys the credibility of the developers of GraphStudioNext, because it raises the question, “If they will lie about trivial shit like this, then what else will they lie about?”

that may be a bit harsh and off base. the op has been a member for 8 years and made 9 previous posts, none of which mention graphedit/graphstudionext.

  6. Thanks for the pointer to GraphStudioNext. I am very unfamiliar with these tools, and was hoping that something else had come along - glad to see it has been carried forward. I'm looking for ways to identify the formats of digital audio bitstreams (either "on the wire" or in files), and another suggestion had pointed me to GraphEdit as a tool. I wanted to use the "Render" format to display the graph for how the system would render them.

I used the link from this site to download "GraphStudioNext 0.7.2.82 64-bit"

It caused a Windows Defender warning, but I installed anyway because videohelp.com has been a reputable site for many years. The program displayed a dialog about registering GFX extension, then displayed a main window, and then went "Not Responding". I tried to close and used the "close program" dialog, but the main window still did not close. I tried to "end process tree" from Resource Monitor, and got "Access Denied".

At that point I restarted the computer (Windows 10 64 bit with multiple audio devices). I'll check back here for guidance.

Try this version, it works fine in my 64-bit Windows 10 build 21H1

It's possible Defender issued a warning due to the files "reputation"
Doesn't mean the file is bad, just that it's unfamiliar
