Friend is having trouble editing 4k with Vegas 17 on Win10.

Preview is still slow and laggy without making a preview/proxy file
He just upgraded to a i7-9700 CPU yet is still having performance issues.

Yet, I have a similar rated AMD CPU and have no issues editing 4k without a proxy file.
He also has GPU acceleration selected.

Are there any settings he can tweak to get reasonable performance commensurate with his fairly powerful CPU?

    ===================

I think we found the issue. Under Preferences -> Video

He set "Dynamic RAM preview Max" to use all of his avail. RAM. !!

As soon as he would preview play a video, his RAM usage would spike to 90%+.

I told him to put it back to 200MB, and it seems to work fine now.

What exactly is that setting about ?

Now, his PC edits and renders the identical files faster than mine.

  2. Has he got a decent GPU with an up to date driver?
    Canon C100 mk2 - Dell XPS8700 i7 - Win 10 - 24gb RAM - GTX 1060/6GB - DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.6.3 - Blackmagic Speed Editor - Presonus Faderport 1 - 3 calibrated screens

Just to clarify, GPU is not used for rendering, and my render times are identical with GPU acceleration turned on or off.
But, GPU does have an effect on video editing itself like preview ?

  4. Unlike Resolve which does use the GPU. Is the drive the video clips are on, or the drive being rendered to, fast enough? He could also stop any unwanted background processes.

  5. What kind of source files ? Did they use the same type of compression type and configuration (eg. I-frame vs. long GOP) ?

e.g. a "4K" prores file is going to decode much faster and edit "snappier" than a "4K" long gop HEVC file

No clue about source file format.
    They are from a GoPro.
    How do I determine?

My Ryzen has 6 cores. His i7-9700 has 8 cores.

I also told him to reduce his bitrate from 42mm to 10mm, for even faster render times.
